Bringing together a collection of “illustrative vignettes,” Showing Theory to Know Theory aims to help students understand complex concepts and terms from the social sciences. Without dumbing things down, each vignette takes form in a different way: concrete, illustrative examples; short, evocative stories; reflexive and intimate poems; illustration, described photographs, and other audio-visual materials. With more than 60 entries, this volume is of use across disciplines and community contexts, democratizing theory while linking it to practical, grounded experience.

These vignettes do a fantastic job at evoking critical thinking without being very long or boring, as many assigned readings from journals are. I believe these short yet interactive methods should be utilized in the university setting, as it could increase student interest and success.

I would use this book to gather more information for a more well rounded understanding of its key themes and ideas. This would be a book that would not intimidate me to read every week for a class due to the easy-going nature of the writing style.

I remember googling epistemology, and various theories, so many times during my undergrad before they fully stuck. From what I've seen I believe the textbook will definitely be an asset for undergraduates!
